Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) is an injection made from your own bone marrow. Max Shokat, D.O., offers BMAC at all three of our offices for selected joint, tendon and spine-region conditions. BMAC is a self-pay service.

How does BMAC work?

After numbing the skin and bone, Dr. Shokat draws a small amount of bone marrow from the back of your hip bone. The sample is concentrated in our office and combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your blood. Dr. Shokat then injects it into the affected area using ultrasound or X-ray guidance. Everything is done in one visit.

What conditions may BMAC help?

BMAC may help reduce pain and improve function in selected patients with:

  • Knee, hip or shoulder arthritis
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint and spine-region pain

Dr. Shokat will review your history and imaging at a consultation to decide whether BMAC is a good fit, or whether another option may work better.

Is BMAC safe?

BMAC uses your own cells, so allergic reactions are rare. Common side effects include soreness at the draw site and the injection site for several days. As with any procedure, there is a small risk of infection or bleeding. Dr. Shokat will review the risks with you before treatment.

When will I notice results?

Results vary. Patients who respond usually notice improvement gradually over several weeks.
